Weeks 8 & 9

5 Master Edits with Sound

For Contrast, the song “Starships” by Nicki Manaj was added as well as a crowd cheering at a football game. “Starships” was chosen because the cheerleader the shot focused on was the flyer of the stunt group. The song goes “Starships are meant to fly”. This non diegetic sound makes the video feel somewhat exciting especially because the football player that cuts in between the shots is running towards his goal. Watching a football game itself is exciting because it’s all about whether or not a player makes it past another on the way to the end zone. The football crowd cheering was Post synchronization dubbing and diegetic in this sense because at a football game crowds cheer on their desired team(even more so when a player is doing really well). The sound effect makes the video of the football player running through the field seem suspenseful as he’s making his way successfully further down the field.

For Parallelism, classical music was added to the clip of the painting of a palm tree. Tropical music was added to the clip of a real palm tree swaying. The difference in music represents the difference between the two palm trees(one being a painting and the other real). Both sounds were non diegetic. The classical music makes the clip feel formal compared to the tropical music, which is more relaxing and associated with natural palm trees.

For Leit motif, the “sad” music was recorded with the video. It would be considered non diegetic and represented the sadness of the boy sitting on the table because he was being bullied by Berluche. The music gives the video a negative and sorrowful feel.

For Simultaneity, two different sound effects were used to act as mine and Berluche’s footsteps as we went up/down the stairs. The sound was Synchronous and was meant to make viewers feel like they had some sort of connection with the people in the video by hearing their footsteps as they’re walking up or downstairs.

For Symbolism, a couple of sentences in Creole were recorded as a voice over to act as another symbol for the character in the video’s ethnicity. In the video, he was standing beneath the Haitian flag. By adding the voice over, another element was added to represent his ethnic background.

Comments

  1. I really liked your leit motif shot with the sound. The melancholy sound effect draws in the viewer's emotions to a greater extent. In this way, the audience is likely to feel more sympathy towards the bullied kid. In contrast, this sympathetic sound also establishes the bully's character as a less favorable one to the audience.
I also liked your symbolism shot. I thought that it was clever to add in the voice over to signify the symbolism that is occurring. Adding the voice over in the Haitian Creole language challenges the viewer's understanding. Although most may not understand the language, the symbolism still resonates with the depiction of the flag.
