Q2 Week 1: MISE-EN-SCENE

The movie I watched was Mulan(1998). The film is a Disney movie about a girl who struggles to bring honor to her family because she doesn’t fit in with the expectations of a Chinese woman in her culture. In fear of the dangers her father would face when he was summoned to fight in the war, Mulan takes his place and runs away to fight for China all while facing the challenges of being one with the other men. Mulan’s excellent progression and wit brings peace to China and honor to her family. In the scene where Mulan is preparing to go to war for her father, she slices her short with a sword, steals her father's armor, and takes a horse with her. The drastic shift from the previous scenes of her being dressed up really girly to be socially accepted and honored in her family show a vast contrast in costume. It's also a pivotal moment in the movie because Mulan is taking her father's place in the war without knowing the challenges that lie ahead. The change in Mul...

Weeks 8 & 9

5 Master Edits with Sound For Contrast, the song “Starships” by Nicki Manaj was added as well as a crowd cheering at a football game. “Starships” was chosen because the cheerleader the shot focused on was the flyer of the stunt group. The song goes “Starships are meant to fly”. This non diegetic sound makes the video feel somewhat exciting especially because the football player that cuts in between the shots is running towards his goal. Watching a football game itself is exciting because it’s all about whether or not a player makes it past another on the way to the end zone. The football crowd cheering was Post synchronization dubbing and diegetic in this sense because at a football game crowds cheer on their desired team(even more so when a player is doing really well). The sound effect makes the video of the football player running through the field seem suspenseful as he’s making his way successfully further down the field. For Parallelism, classical music was added to the cli...

Week 7 Assignment

The shots I used as examples were from the movie : The Little Mermaid 2018. Contrast: In this shot, the scenes are switching between the story and the Grandmother telling the story to her grandchildren. It shows contrast by showing two different views of the same story: First person and 3rd person. By using a contrasting shot, the director makes the audience feel intrigued by the story and side explanations occurring when the grandmother comes into the picture. Leit Motif: In these shots, the Leit Motif are the dark notes being played on the organ to reveal the mermaids taken soul. The organ holds the soul of the little mermaid, which was taken by a wizard she had made a deal with to have legs in the past. By using the vial in which the mermaid’s soul is stored, the wizard is able to control her in certain ways. Every time the wizard goes to fetch the vial, he plays a specific tune on the organ which then reveals the vial in a box within the storage of the orga...
