Commentary on Movie Angles (Week 4)
Review of a few Camera Angles in the Movie
Black Panther (2018)
From Producer Kevin Feige
The movie I chose to comment on was Black Panther (2018) because I didn't really get it the first time I watched it so I decided it would be in my best interest to rewatch. This movie is a Sci-Fi/ Action about an African country, Wakanda that was hidden away from the rest of the world since its discovery. Wakanda is made up almost completely from the most powerful metal in the world, vibranium. This precious and powerful metal attracts a man who intends to use the Vibranium for evil purposes. The throne of Wakanda is also challenged throughout the movie and the question of whether or not the vibranium falls into the wrong hands stays with the viewers throughout the movie.
In one the introductory scenes. a shuttle from Wakanda is shown from a High Angle. As it rises into the sky, people gather at the bottom and look up at it in awe. The High Angle makes the shuttle seem all important and astonishing. This indicates how incredible Wakanda's technology is.
In this Establishing shot, a pretty sunset is displayed as Prince T'Challa, Nakia, and Okoye are making their way to Wakanda. This shot foreshadows how symbolic the sunset in Wakanda actually comes to be. The shot establishes a mountain range with a sunrise in the background as the location.
In this Medium shot, the prince and Nakia are shown from the knees up. The way this scene is set up, it's clear that there's history and chemistry between them. T'Challa and Nakia share some sort of intimate moment.
In this Two Shot, Okoye, Nakia, and T'Challa are arriving to Wakanda. They are happy and emotional to be back home; a lot of admiration for their country is revealed. in this scene.
This Over the Shoulder shot occurs as T'Challa speaks to his mother about him becoming King after the recent death of his father. This creates an interesting conversation for viewers to speculate because you could easily see both people's reactions to the serious topic.
This scene was a Point-of -View shot. Klau, a villain who was robbing a museum at the time for their Wakandan Vibranium hovered over a museum guide who was poisoned in the process of the scheme. In the shot you are able to see Klau through her blurry point of view as she loses consciousness.
This scene was a Reaction shot of Nakia as she spectates T'Challa's life-threatening battle with his rival. It becomes clear to viewers that she is very concerned for his well being and most importantly, his life. Her reaction also creates suspense as the audience is anxious to find out whether he survives the fight or not.
